The Teatro dei Naviganti association proposes an event of particular prestige: a butoh dance workshop held by the famous artist Sumako Koseki. The workshop will develop in 10 days, with 7 hours of daily training: four devoted to the acquisition of the basic principles of butoh and practice, and three dedicated to the creation of a performance, which will be proposed to the audience during the last day of the workshop.
The program of the ws is divided into two phases:
- · The pedagogy of Sumako is based on practices regarding the Ki (energy, breath), especially through breathing and movement; the Suriashi (walking, active meditation); the study of different states (emotions, materials, animals). The Butoh of Sumako is influenced by the martial arts, according to the principles that aim to make the body naturally reactive, and the tradition of Japanese theater, in some concept and form. Improvisations and experiments are designed to achieve a "freed dance", through a search that does not involve the intellect, but it burrows deep into memories inscribed under our skin, in our reptilian brain, which comes alive with memories and archetypes encoded in our DNA, referring back to a collective memory.
CREATING A PERFORMANCE ON THE THEME "EARTHQUAKE":
| ||The theme of the work will be inspired by the earthquake of 1908 in Messina, Sicily. The aim is not to describe the story of the tragedy, but, through the work, we hope to touch the essence of Butoh as “the dance of the darkness”. It should not be misunderstood as often done by some Judeo-Christian thought as a lost of life with a image of terror. The darkness is the place where we can find the strongest light and life. We hope that our work will be a message for LIFE.|
PROGRAM OF THE WORKSHOP:
Workshop dates: 18th to 27th July 2010.
Lesson hours: 10:30 to 13:30; 15:30 to 19:30 (Total: 10 days for 7 hours a day).
Presentation of the performance created: 27th day of July.
Workshop languages: Italian and English.
Cost of workshop: 250.00 euros (cost the workshop) + 10,00 euros (insurance)
* The rooms are equipped with air conditioning.
The workshop is indicated mainly for dancers, actors, jugglers, or anyone interested in learning and experiencing the technique of Butoh as a means of artistic creation and personal knowledge.
