Yearly birthday photo shows how daughter is growing into her mum’s wedding dress

So, one mum came up with a clever way of tracking just how much her daughter had grown and changed, year by year.

US mum blogger Brandy Yearous takes a picture of her daughter Allison wearing her wedding dress every year on her birthday.

In a post for Today, Brandy, who is mum to 14-year-old Ryan and 12-year-old Allison, explained that she got the idea from a magazine she read while pregnant with her son.

‘I read about a cute idea where you take a picture of your child every year on their birthday in the same piece of their parents’ clothing so you can “watch them grown into an adult,”‘ she explained.

After tracking son Ryan’s growth using a pair of her husband’s jeans, she wanted to do something similar with Allison, but decided it would be extra special to use her wedding dress.

‘I chose my wedding dress for a lot reasons,’ she writes. ‘One, because I want to get more than one day’s use out of it! Two, I really think she’s going to want her own dress when she gets married, so what a wonderful way to celebrate my own marriage than to pass a tradition down to my only daughter. Three, I think it will be a great memento to show at her wedding someday.’

So, since she was a baby, Brandy has taken a picture of her little girl in the big dress. It begins to fit her a little better every year.

‘At first, it was a fun way to watch the kids grow up (not to mention, watching the deterioration of our couch), but now that they are teens and tweens, every year is becoming more heartbreaking,’ Brandy admits.

She says the most poignant moment was the year the straps on her dress no longer fell off Allison’s shoulders.

‘She’s grown up enough I start to see her in a wedding dress,’ she says, adding ‘It’s becoming less my dress and more her growing into a young lady.’

She doesn’t expect Allison to wear her wedding dress on her big day, but she hopes to snap a photo of her in it before she walks down the aisle.

And she plans to continue the birthday tradition throughout her children’s teens, to capture each stage of their journey towards adulthood.

‘It makes each birthday that much more valuable,’ she adds.
