With Paris Fashion Week running March 1-9, Relaxnews caught up with Masha Ma, who will reveal the Fall-Winter 2016/2017 collection of MASHAMA today, March 6 at 5:00pm local time. The designer outlined what to expect from this new ready-to-wear lineup, from inspirations and iconic pieces to upcoming trends.

What was the inspiration behind the new collection?

I want to continue with the eccentric minimalism that is becoming the DNA of the brand and an exploration of youth subculture that inspires the brand core and my close team. An underground culture where gender has no relevance and everything is reimagined. The focus is on contouring everyday garments, translating into a modernist-edged wardrobe for daily wear.

What are the collection’s three key pieces?

Narrow-cut pants of an oversized tailored suit. We want to explore tailoring further so we are adding day/night sharp dress suiting as a new addition and oversize, padded washed denim unisex duffle coat.

Which famous person would best embody these looks?

We believe we are always designing for very strong-minded independent individuals.... A wardrobe with a modernist edge for everyday wear, that makes you feel content when you put it on and allows for gender diversity, which could be worn by a woman or a guy...

What’s your view of fashion today?

Today, the new generation is credited with being part of a wider movement to challenge the status quo. The creativity of our contemporary aesthetics has a promising echo internationally and domestically. The new generation of Chinese designers are inspired by a more international culture movement. They work ceaselessly to offer a new image of the new generation not only to China but also to the world. Their perspective on fashion is moving towards a truly intelligent and understandable beauty, which is refreshing. Because of the “Fashion Invasion,” there is a wider understanding of international views of fashion and that means an increasingly sensitive approach to being different from others.

Social media presence has become indispensable for designers and labels today. Has this direct contact with the public changed the way you work?

Social media is significant in our lives. Pinterest, among others, has become a new research library for me and Instagram has replaced my daily papers. Social media has gained great popularity among the general public, especially youth and this “face-to-face contact” has brought us much convenience: the general public can get more accurate information from designers and get closer to them. After improving our social networks, we found it easier to maintain a sense of personal connection. This kind of ‘face-to-face’ communication can quickly build a bond that sets foundation for trust and ultimately, lasting business relationships.
