The 70th annual Cannes Film Festival is currently in progress and while the spotlight is obviously on the previews of phenomenal new films from around the world, there’s no denying that it is the celebrities and what they’re spotted wearing on the red carpet at the French Riviera, that have caught the fancy of all and sundry. Here’s a round-up of the hits and misses this time around.

Champagne Shenanigans

It appeared as if Emily Ratajkowski and Bella Hadid were twinning on the red carpet this year, in silken champagne coloured gowns. While the former was dressed in a custom-made Twinset dress that featured spaghetti straps, a thigh-high slit, and a plunging neckline, Bella wore an Alexander Vauthier gown, bringing in some classic Hollywood glamour. Her gown too featured a daring slit. Both actresses went for strappy sandals and statement jewellery to offset the muted colour of their ensembles.

But if there was someone who stole the show and our hearts, it would have to be Elle Fanning who arrived for the debut of her latest film, Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled, in a strapless Vivienne Westwood gown. Featuring a hand-painted unicorn on the train, there were also illustrations of a shooting star named Elle, hearts, and the planet Gaia, all of which were in pink.

Jumpstart in a jumpsuit

Wearing a jumpsuit is always a gamble, especially on the red carpet of a film festival as big as this. But Victoria's Secret model, Sara Sampaio, was a vision in a backless jumpsuit embellished with beads. The netted feature at the neckline was an interesting element on the already gorgeous gown. Prior to the festival’s opening ceremony, jury member, Jessica Chastain was spotted in a well fitted scarlet jumpsuit that she paired with stilettos.

Once upon a fairy-tale

Ball gowns were a red carpet favourite. While beauty queen Aishwarya Rai Bachchan channelled a Cinderella-esque look in her stately off-shoulder powder blue ball gown by Michael Cinco, Winne Harlow looked sensational in a voluminous floor-grazing sapphire blue number. Featuring a plunging neckline and a gorgeous train, the Canadian beauty accessorised with dazzling pear drop earrings.

Futuristic Fashion

Kendall Jenner’s suggestive outfit that she chose to wear to the space-themed Chopard bash during the festival last week, was among the most popular looks at Cannes. Decked up in a funky Ralph & Russo silver gown that showcased a structured corset, the sheer sides exposed her bare skin underneath. In keeping with the galactic theme, she adorned diamond jewellery. Elle Fanning wowed the crowd in a delicate silk chiffon soft lime green gown. With a plunging neckline, the dress came embroidered with metallic leaves. The ends of it featured interesting floral accents.

Cape town at Cannes

So everyone and their mother has been talking about how breath-taking Deepika Padukone looked in that single-shouldered emerald green Brandon Maxwell gown. This caped creation featured a thigh-high slit that further accentuated her never-ending legs. Her hair in a lovely up-do added resplendence to her entire appearance, as did her statement jewellery and footwear. Being five months pregnant didn’t quite stop Thai actress, Araya Hargate, from grabbing eyeballs on the red carpet. Dressed in a custom Ralph & Russo gown with a coordinating silk cape covered with crystals and ostrich feathers (yeah, that’s right!), she looked majestic. We also liked Fan Bingbing’s Elie Saab Couture blue cape gown although the necklace she wore wasn’t very flattering.

Tassel Hassle

Jessica Chastain’s tasselled purple dress received a lot of negative reactions. The dress she wore to the Okja premier was form fitting at the top and looked great on her. The lacy bodice was in good taste. However, the floor-sweeping hooked tassel extensions looked rather absurd and spoilt the overall look of the dress.

What’s the patch?

Wish we knew what Chinese popstar Li Yuchun was thinking when she opted to wear an off-white silk Gucci dress that featured the most ridiculous colourful metallic cat patches and intricate bead embroidery all over it.

Fringes and Fur

Frederique Bel was easily among the most inappropriately dressed celebs on the red carpet. The rather confusing warrior princess meets cowgirl green outfit had too much going on with random sheer parts and hideous fringes. Julianne Moore would’ve made it to our best dressed list if her Chanel dress didn’t have that fur like layer covering her neck.

Prints and Patterns

Dressed in Louis Vuitton, Michelle Williams’ dress was unflattering with OTT prints that were all over the dress. Tallia Storm’s black lace halter neck gown at the premier of Loveless, was rather bold on the top, but flowed down into a black and grey printed silk full-length skirt that had ruffled tiers. Clearly, it wasn’t a winning look.

Pant Rant

While Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looked chic in a white Versace pantsuit with Aaradhya by her side, when they arrived at the French Riviera, it was rather unfortunate that Jeanne Balibar decided to wear a Jacquemus pantsuit from their Spring 2017 collection. The ill-fitted outfit seemed to have been a slothful choice and definitely looked like a disaster on the red carpet.Read more at:long prom dresses
