LONDON, February 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Leading holiday specialists offer five helpful money-saving travel tips before heading to Mediterranean archipelago

Even though we're only two months into the New Year, holidaymakers are already beginning to book their 2012 holiday jaunts to sun-filled lands abroad.

Malta is without doubt one of the most popular foreign tourist destinations among British holidaymakers. The sultry year-long weather conditions coupled with the wide use of the English language makes this Mediterranean archipelago favoured by both couples and families a-like.

Leading holiday specialists, Mercury Direct- while providing cheap, quality Malta holidays - are now also offering handy, money-saving travel tips; ensuring their customers are well equipped before travelling to Malta in 2012.

Without further ado, here are Mercury Direct's five money-saving travel tips:

  1. Do not change money at the airport: Exchange rates at UK airport bureaux de changes' aren't favourable and far less generous than those along the high-street, so make sure you change your hard-earned money before heading to the airport.
  2. Apply for a European Health Insurance Card: The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows you to get state-provided health care in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries at a reduced cost. Applications are free and the card is valid for five years. However each countries healthcare system is different, so make sure you check Malta's before travelling.
  3. Make sure your passport is valid: Firstly, travellers won't need a visa to gain entry into Malta- as it's part of the European Union. However all Mercury Direct customers must have a minimum of six months left valid on their  passport after their planned Holiday return date. Obtaining a new UK passport on such short notice is both irksome and costly.
  4. Always pay in pound sterling on the plane: Covertly airlines charge a currency exchange fee. They may advertise the cost of items in pound sterling however when prices are quoted in euros, the mark-up is excessively high.
  5. Make sure you're covered with travel insurance: Travel insurance is an essential part of any planned holiday. Policies can save holidaymakers thousands of pounds when those unfortunate accidents or incidents do in fact happen.  Mercury Direct advises all their customers to purchase travel insurance before booking their holiday abroad.
