Britain's a Washout: Escape to Lanzarote
LONDON, June 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
Britain has just endured its wettest April and May since records began, and there was widespread flooding in many areas, after as much as 20mm of rain fell in the space of just 12 hours. Despite this, we still seem to be in the position of being officially in drought, and facing a hosepipe ban over the summer. Surely there are places nearby with less rain for an affordable family holiday?
Monarch Airlines recommends Lanzarote as the top location for Brits wishing to escape the deluge. The easternmost island of the Canaries, Lanzarote is just 79 miles off the coast of Africa. And it has much to commend it to visitors: the island's distinctive culture and lifestyle - the product of its ancient history - its cuisine and its natural beauty. Lanzarote is also a volcanic island, which has resulted in some fascinating environmental wonders to explore, such as the e longest Volcanic Tunnel in the world: the Atlantida Tunnel.
But one of Lanzarote's greatest attributes is its climate. Lanzarote has, on average, just 6mm of rainfall in April, falling to zero in June, July and August. This low figure is mostly due to the largely flat landscape of the Island. With the highest peak only 671m, Lanzarote's low hills don't force the clouds up to a high enough altitude for moisture to condense and turn into rain - unlike the Welsh mountains and the Pennines do for Britain. The higher western Canary Islands receive plenty of rain on their mountainous northern slopes. Most of the rain rolls in from the West and falls over the other islands before reaching Lanzarote. The island sits, effectively, in a rain shadow.
And that's just rainfall. The average temperature in Lanzarote across May June and July is around 26 degrees. Even better, the sea surrounding Lanzarote, and lapping against its beautiful beaches, rarely drops below 18°C. In summer, it can be anything up to 23°C in the water. Holidays to Lanzarote are arguably the perfect way to afford a holiday in the sun.
