CNN: Lviv Looks, Smells, Tastes Like The Best Of Europe

KYIV, Ukraine, July 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Western Ukrainian Lviv became a modern business hub, yet the city manages to preserve its "old world charm," reports CNN's Eye On [Ukraine] journalist Phil Black. Along with Kyiv and Odesa Eye On visited "a hidden gem full of historical intrigues" â€“ Lviv.

"Cobbled rides, astounding architecture, arousing good coffee, hot melting chocolate, and such fine beer," this is how Phil Black introduces the city of Lviv upon his July 2012 visit. One of the world's largest news networks names the city a hidden gem because unlike other beautiful European cities Lviv is not one of the famous tourist destinations. In fact, many tourists still do not know the city exists.

Earlier in the day, however, Lviv was at the crossroads of major trade routes between the country's east and west. Every vendor passing through the city was obliged to stay in Lviv and sell the produce for two weeks. Due to its favorable location Lviv prospered financially and developed into a beautiful city for it could afford hiring the best architects.

Lviv's outstanding architecture still speaks of its former prosperity. Nonetheless, the city was not always so fortunate, for its wealth attracted many and throughout its history Lviv was dominated by Poles, Habsburgs, Russians, Nazis, Soviets. As the Soviet Union seized to exist, many Lviv citizens discovered new entrepreneurial opportunities. For instance, Eye On Ukraine was surprised to discover that the ancient city was a booming international spot for IT industry.

Another one of Lviv's indisputable potentials is tourism. The international community is once again starting to discover the forgotten historical and financial center. The local citizens believe that soon the former wealth and fame would return to the city, remarks CNN.

CNN's Eye On series dedicate their July programming to Ukraine. CNN highlights politics, culture, and business in Ukraine. Starting with the conclusion of the European Football Championship that took place in Ukraine in June 2012, CNN's reporter Max Foster reported that "a whole tournament's been a great success for Ukraine."

The reporters went to Ukraine for the EURO 2012 final, met with legendary Ukrainian footballer Andriy Shevchenko and, in addition to Lviv, mapped their route from the capital Kyiv to renowned beaches and the country's biggest ports in the south.
