Europe Faces Transnational Terror Threat From Homegrown 'Jihadists'

VADUZ, Liechtenstein, June 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

European countries face trouble at their own borders as home-grown jihadists, battle-hardened in Syria, return to their home countries.

Al-Qaeda linked groups such as Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) have become a transnational terrorist threat as incubators of these radicalized terrorists who are being exported back to their home countries in Europe.

The two most extreme groups battling the Syrian regime's forces, Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIS, have been successful in attracting increasing numbers of radicalised European Union citizens to join the fight in Syria. These citizens, after fighting in Syria for prolonged periods, typically adopt the extremist theo-ideology of these two groups.

An important part of their acquired conviction is that they have to avenge their brethren in Syria by attacking the infidel world - particularly Europe and the US.

The Syrian question, and the foreign policy challenge it imposes on Europe, has, in security and geopolitical terms, now moved on beyond the outcome of the current Syrian presidential elections.
