Britons crave spontaneity but the pressure of daily living leaves us tied to our diaries, according to a new study.

People are constantly told their lives will improve if they are more organised, but research reveals we are happier doing the opposite.

Almost half of those questioned preferred an unplanned night out to an organised event.

And a third classed a spontaneous celebration as more fun than a pre-planned one.

Today's hectic lifestyles mean busy Brits have become obsessed with organising their social diaries often months in advance, whether it is birthdays, social occasions or a catch up with friends, research for Freixenet, the UK's No 1 sparkling wine, revealed.

Rather than having an impromptu get together people say the time pressures of modern life mean events are now often diarised weeks ahead.

Over two thirds of the population reckon they have at least three events planned at any one time and fewer than one in six say they don't regularly plan their social engagements.

Liza Madrigal, Head of Marketing for Freixenet UK, said: "We are all guilty of being beholden to our diary arrangements, but we believe that once in a while everyone should add a little spontaneity in their lives. Perhaps consider taking a step back to appreciate the joyful little things that happen every day, using them as an excuse for a celebration".

The research was commissioned to celebrate the UK launch of the Freixenet #LittleThings campaign, which includes a series of humorous videos encouraging the nation to spontaneously celebrate life's little pleasures more often.
