On Oct. 22-25, Moscow hosted the 10th Jubilee Central & Eastern European Software Engineering Conference in Russia (CEE-SECR 2014), an independent international software development conference. CEE-SECR gathered 769 IT professionals representing 298 companies: from programmers and scientists to entrepreneurs and investors.

On Oct. 22 was launched the first ever CEE-SECR Hackathon. Nine teams with interesting ideas assembled in the API Moscow Center, to develop the first versions of their products for 48 hours. Experienced mentors offered consultations to the participants.  A results presentation for the jury took place on Oct. 24 within the conference main program.

The main CEE-SECR days went from 23 to 24 October. The program included almost one hundred and fifty reports, presentations from invited world-class experts, discussions, master class and a beer party at the end of the first day.

5 rooms of the Digital October Center were filled with participants. Attendees could choose the most interesting topic at any given time. Talks for any taste were presented during the conference: technologies and methodologies, project and team management, education and business in the industry, search for personnel issues and many others.

For the first time CEE-SECR offered conference visitors a mobile application, which allowed them to check the program, send questions to the speakers and evaluate presentations.

According to the voting, the most interesting reports were:

  • "Breaking the mould: Lean Product Management and MVP in a large company" by Ilia Kuznetsov from Kaspersky Lab;
  • "Managing the legal risks in software development" by Yana Chirko from Dentons;
  • And "Training of young IT specialists by own resources" by Dmitry Voloshin from Mail.Ru Group.

As the best conference discussion visitors chose "Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)", moderated by Andrey Ivanov from JetBrains and SPbAU RAS.

The closing ceremony was held in the evening of the second day. The Program Committee presented an annual Bertrand Meyer award for the best research paper in the field of software engineering. This year's winner became Semyon Grigorev from JetBrains with his talk "String-Embedded Language Support in Integrated Development Environment".

Another special award was established for Michael Pozhidaev, who told CEE-SECR attendees about his work on making computers accessible for blind and visually impaired people - specific operating system and frameworks for creating applications.

Hackaton teams received their prizes. Digital Design Company, Jet Brains, Kaspersky labs and Russian Venture Company announced winners in their special nominations. In addition, according to the general voting of the mentors was selected the best project of all Hackathon. It became "the service to evaluate and compare services" named "AlterGo".

On Oct. 25 CEE-SECR's traditional Workshop day took place.

Mickey W. Mantle, author of "Managing the unmanageable," held the eponymous course in which he presented his, based on the considerable experience, vision of "rules, tools, and ideas for managing people and teams in software development".

Nikita Efimov and Yuri Vedenin from IT MINE taught participants of their master-class "interface design basics".

Another course "Checking the demand for new products and services in the field of information security" was presented by a team of specialists from Kaspersky Academy and RIS Ventures.

Intel Software ran 2 workshops free of charge for the CEE-SECR attendees - "Mobile Technologies and Intel Software Products" and "Parallel Programming Technologies and Intel Software Products".

This year's conference received support from RVC, Deutsche Bank, Intel, JetBrains, SAP, Sberbank Technologies, IBM, Fisrt Line Software, EMC, QT Digia, Digital Design, Genesys, Luxoft, Oracle, Jelastic, Mediapark, associations RUSSOFT, APKIT, RAEC and others.
