Education Policy and the NHS will be Top Priority for Undecided Students says UNiDAYS

[04-May-2017]

NOTTINGHAM, England, May 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --

UNiDAYS, the world's largest Student Affinity Network, has revealed that 78% of students plan on heading to the ballots on June 8, however over a third (32%) are still undecided which way to vote.

With over 2m UK students within its network, UNiDAYS asked its members their thoughts[1] on the upcoming snap election and revealed key highlights;

  • Most students plan on voting for Labour (34%), closely followed by 'undecided' voters (32%) with Conservative Party voters (17%) taking third place
  • In terms of policies, education and the NHS is their top priority with Brexit policies taking fourth place
  • News sites will be the main channel (75%) students go to find out more and Theresa May might have to backtrack on her TV debate stance as 43% claim they'll be watching debates and TV (39%) to help them decide
  • Among the 'other' policies that students care about, respondents listed; closing the wealth gap; tackling corporate tax evasion; and provisions for the arts and sciences

There was no sign of a north south divide amongst younger voters as the results appeared generally consistent across regions with the highest percentage voting for Labour followed by undecided. In terms of gender, a higher percentage of females were undecided (37.30%) compared to their male counterparts (25.22%). Although the Labour party and undecided was the majority, a quarter of young males are planning on voting Conservative compared to only 11% of young females.

Josh Rathour CEO of UNiDAYS comments; "With such a significant proportion of UK students using our network, we always strive to understand the topics that are important to our members and the election is no exception. Giving students a platform for their voice to be heard is very important to us, together with encouraging participation when issues matter to them which is why we also shared information on how to register to vote, so their voices are not only heard, but their votes counted."
