Elsevier Wins Illustrated Book Award and Four First Place Prizes at 2017 BMA Medical Book Awards

Elsevier congratulates its medical authors and editors for this industry recognition and consistently producing high-quality medical content

LONDON, September 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --

Elsevier, the information analytics business specializing in science and health, today announced the British Medical Association (BMA) honored 30 of its professional and scholarly products with awards at the BMA Medical Book Awards ceremony.

During the event on Sept. 11 at London's BMA House, the BMA Illustrated Book Award was presented to Elsevier's Auerbach's Wilderness Medicine, 2 Volume Set, 7th Edition, by Drs. Paul S. Auerbach, Tracy A. Cushing and N. Stuart Harris. The judges' review noted how the publication's "logical and well thought-out diagrams and illustrations supplement the detailed information in a very impressive manner."

Auerbach's Wilderness Medicine also received Highly Commended honors in the Surgery category.

"My associate editors and I are grateful and humbled to receive this award from the British Medical Association," Dr. Auerbach said. "Wilderness medicine is a marvelous and relevant specialty, particularly in these times. In addition to the excitement and fascination that attend the adventures, science, and exploration underlying wilderness medical practice, come the responsibilities to improve the evidence and discover how to be more skilled clinicians.

"The contributors to the 7th edition of Wilderness Medicine are remarkable people with a real passion for the wilderness and its inhabitants, and this award is shared by all of them," he added.

Elsevier received first place prizes in the following categories:

"This very notable book prize from the BMA is a welcome and significant event in the history of the development of our book Human Anatomy," said Phillip Harris, who was part of the book's team of authors and attended the London event. "It is reassuring that Anatomy can still achieve such pride of place in the basic medical sciences."

Elsevier also received the following Highly Commended honors, by category:

"It was one of the greatest honors of my career to receive this award from the BMA," said Dr. Shawn C. Shea, author of Psychiatric Interviewing. "With this book and its video illustrations an attempt has been made to raise the teaching of clinical interviewing to the level of art, craft and science it truly deserves. Clinical interviewing is the foundation of our field, and effectively transmitting these skills to younger generations defines the heart and soul of our mission."
